Here at Montauk Tackle we cannot stress enough how important it is that you protect yourself from the sun and from the UV radiation given off by UV rays. Protecting yourself from the sun is a year round responsibility and it can be made easy as long as you have the proper UV protection.
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of radiation emitted by the sun and artificial sources, such as tanning beds, mercury vapor lighting, and a few other types of lights including halogen, fluorescent, and incandescent lights.
There are different types of UV radiation rays and they are broken down into 3 types, ultraviolet A (UVA), ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet C (UVC). Most of the UVC radiation is absorbed by the ozone layer so there is not much risk of UVC radiation, but UVA and UVB can both affect your health.
There are three primary health benefits of UV exposure, including the production of vitamin D, improvement in mood, and increased energy. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus from food and also assists in bone development. Vitamin D also promotes the creation of Serotonin, and changes in Serotonin levels affect mood and behavior.
Too much UV radiation exposure has the potential to cause harmful effects to the eye, skin, and immune system. This includes sunburn, as well as some forms of skin cancer. Excessive UV exposure could cause blinding eye diseases, if you do not use proper eye protection. Most cases of melanoma, which is the deadliest kind of skin cancer, is caused by overexposure to UV radiation.
You can protect yourself from UV radiation by:
- Staying in the shade during the midday hours when the sun’s UV rays are the strongest
- Wearing clothes that cover your arms and legs
- Wearing a hat that covers your face, neck, and ears
- Wearing sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays
- Using sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, which is good for UVA and UVB protection
When looking for sun protective clothing, make sure to choose clothing that has been designed to protect against the sun and has been tested to confirm its Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). UPF is a rating system used for apparel, and the testing gauges how effective the fabric is against ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B light (UVA & UVB). UPF clothing goes through testing at independent labs where the labs determine how effective the fabric is at blocking UV radiation.
