The American Society for Testing and Materials has developed the standard for labeling garments as sun-protective. A UPF of 30 or higher meets the Skin Cancer Foundation’s seal of recommendation.
UPF ratings as follows:
- Good: indicates clothes with a UPF factor of 15 to 24
- Very Good: indicates clothes with a UPF factor of 25 to 39
- Excellent: indicates clothes with a UPF factor of 40 to 50
A UPF rating of 50+ indicates the fabric will allow 1/50th — of the ultraviolet radiation to pass through to your skin.
